Academic freedom is the foundation of the exchange of ideas and broadening of perspectives in a dynamic learning environment. It empowers faculty members with the autonomy to explore, discuss, and share ideas without concern of censorship or fear of retaliation. This freedom is not just a protection of individual expression; it is also a protection of the pursuit of critical thinking, open dialogue, and advancement of knowledge. Academic freedom ensures that instructors can guide students regarding how to think, rather than being compelled to tell them what to think. Faculty members at Santa Monica College are not only supported in their intellectual independence but also in introducing students to a diverse array of perspectives and teaching methods.
Article 29 of our contract presents the principle of academic freedom and the college’s Board Policy 4030 describes the institution’s view. Faculty members have the right to design their courses and teach in ways that reflect their expertise and professional judgment. With this freedom comes the responsibility to respect the variety of perspectives that students and colleagues bring to the table.
